How Our Nurses Make a Difference

May is National Nurses Month, a time to honor our nurses who help make better tomorrows possible for our patients. This year, the American Nursing Association selected the theme, Nurses Make a Difference, to honor the varying roles of nurses and their positive impact on our lives. Nurses make a difference as trusted advocates who help ensure individuals, families, and populations receive quality patient care and services.

The same holds true for nurses at AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy. As clinical caregivers, our more than 40 nurses nurture our patients, help them navigate the healthcare system, and provide a caring face for those going through challenging times.

At AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy, our nurses play important roles as members of our patients’ care team. They include:
   • Care management nurses
   • Fertility nurses
   • Clinical education specialists
   • Infusion care nurses
   • Utilization management nurses
   • Nursing network nurses

Meet some of the nurses who have a sincere desire to help our patients achieve their health goals, feel better and live a healthier life.

Mary Glavin RN, BSN, CRNI, VA-BC
Nursing network educator, Clinical and Professional Patient Management Services

As nursing network educator for Clinical and Professional Patient Management Services, Mary Glavin creates educational modules for the company’s learning management systems. “My role allows me to develop curriculum and educate our nurses and our patients. Education gives people the tools they need to accomplish what needs to be done.  For most people, knowledge helps decrease anxiety and fear, and helps increase confidence and control,” says Glavin.

“What I love about being a nurse is working with professionals who care about other people, and are also tough, strong, courageous, smart, flexible, and committed to improvement, and doing the right thing,” she says. “This describes our leadership on the nursing network team.”

Sallyann Spina, RN
Fertility Order Review Nurse

Sallyann Spina is a registered nurse on the Fertility Order Review team. She educates and supports fertility patients telephonically and teaches patients virtually how to properly store and administer their injectable medications.

“I love being able to help, support, and educate patients from all over the U.S. who are struggling with infertility,” says Spina. “Our patients – as well as their families – benefit from our nurses by receiving outstanding care and support. Our nurses are committed, compassionate professionals who advocate and ensure all patients receive the care they need.”

Ruben Iglesias, RN
Infusion Care Nurse, Specialty360 Nursing and Infusion Services

Ruben Iglesias’s role as infusion care nurse involves coordinating care for the company’s Specialty360 Nursing and Infusion Services therapy patients. This means collecting assessment data to accurately paint a picture of the patient and their situation and collaborating with our nursing network team to get qualified agencies staffed to administer training for the infusion.

“Our knowledge of infusion allows us to preemptively think and provide solutions to possible points of opportunities in the home infusion process to prevent any lapse in therapy,” he says. “The interprofessional collaboration between our pharmacists, technicians, nurses and patient care advocates is impactful for our patients with life-threatening conditions. The impact of a nurse advocating for the needs of the patient is paramount to positive patient outcomes.”

Johanna R. Morales, LPN
Care Management Nurse

Care management nurses like Johanna Morales counsel patients who take specialty medications. She explains how to use medications and best manage side effects or symptoms from the disease. Her objective is to help patients obtain the greatest benefits from their treatment, feel better and succeed with therapy.

“I encounter patients who are starting a treatment for the first time and do not know what to expect,” she says. “They have lots of questions, may feel uneasy about starting a new medication, and are often unsure if they can do what it takes to succeed in their treatment. I can clarify questions, educate, encourage, and affirm them. It is very rewarding to receive their thanks and to hear a sigh of relief at the end of the call.”
