I was 7 months pregnant with my third child, running through the airport to catch a flight home for bedtime. At the same time, I was trying to order my mother-in-law’s specialty oncology prescription because in just three days, her medicine would run out.

Earlier that day, the specialty pharmacy had tried calling me several times, but as a full-time working mom, I was in meetings and couldn’t take the calls. It was down to the wire for getting the order in and getting on my flight.

My personal experience is the patient experience. At AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy, we don’t take that lightly. We treat every patient like they could be our mother, grandfather, sister, or son.

I recently read a quote that said, “A day of work is a life event for a patient.”

If you’ve ever had to coordinate care for someone, or arrange a specialty prescription, this quote might ring true for you – it did for me. Not just as someone who takes care of her mother-in-law’s specialty medications, but as someone who influences the overall patient experience.

The patient experience is more than just delivering medications. It’s showing compassion, empathy and understanding. It’s making patients feel heard, respected, and valued. It’s building a relationship so patients can trust us. And it’s creating an environment that is welcoming, comfortable and safe.

The patient experience is also about convenience. That’s why we offer different ways to engage: on the phone, over email or through text messages. Patients can refill prescriptions online, do their clinical assessments online, and schedule deliveries via text. As we continue to innovate, my vision is to continue to personalize our patient experience and find ways to continue and manage our patients clinically and find ways to be even more convenient.

We know focusing on the entire patient experience results in better patient outcomes, but it also reduces the risk of unintended consequences like drug interactions or adverse effects. We track our patient’s satisfaction on a regular basis to see how we’re doing and what we can improve. Though we’re just a piece to the overall healthcare puzzle, offering a positive specialty pharmacy experience can build trust and confidence that will truly impact a patients’ overall health and wellbeing

We truly believe in our purpose of providing hope and care for better tomorrows. Because we all deserve a better tomorrow.
