Caring for Our Spanish-Speaking Patients
Latino patients are no strangers to experiencing communication challenges in healthcare settings. Just under half (46%) Hispanic adults in the U.S. say they have a close friend or family member who needs a Spanish-speaking healthcare provider or translator.1
That’s why when our Spanish speaking patients reach out to us, our bilingual patient care advocates (PCAs) are here for them. Our own Verenis Hernandez Vargas, a dedicated team member and proud Latina, shares how providing a patient experience in Spanish helps enable seamless access to our services.
Born and raised in New Jersey to a Mexican American family, Verenis is aware language barriers have caused challenges related to medication adherence. Having witnessed similar situations throughout her life and career is what inspired her to become a PCA. “It hit home with me,” she said. Thinking of her own mother, who has limited English proficiency, Verenis knew the struggles. She wanted to help the people in her community communicate, allowing them to ‘get things done’.

While she started working at AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy in 2019 with English-speaking patients, about a year ago Verenis volunteered to become one of our agents certified in Spanish. She wanted to provide service in her first language to help bridge the gap for Spanish-speaking patients. Whether it was taking their medication orders, answering their questions, or calling back for a prescription follow up, Verenis put her language skills and her cultural upbringing to the task.
Most rewarding to Verenis is knowing she provides some relief to the patients. They thank her for helping with what they thought was going to be harder without language support. In her own words, “I want patients to know even if there is a communication barrier, there are always people that want to go above and beyond for them. I always wanted to be that person for other people. I love the opportunity AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy gives us to be that person for somebody else who doesn’t speak English or has a hard time speaking it. I am glad I can use my voice here to help our patients.”

Cuidamos de nuestros pacientes que hablan español
Para los pacientes latinos no es extraño experimentar retos en la comunicación para obtener sus cuidados de salud. Poco menos de la mitad (46%) de los adultos hispanos en los Estados Unidos dice que tiene un amigo cercano o familiar que necesita un proveedor de servicios de salud que hable español o un traductor.1
Por eso, cuando nuestros pacientes que hablan español nos llaman, nuestros procuradores del cuidado del paciente están aquí para ellos. Verenis Hernández Vargas, miembro latina y dedicada de nuestro equipo, comparte como brindar una experiencia en español a los pacientes les permite acceder nuestros servicios sin fricción.
Nacida y criada en Nueva Jersey, de familia mexicana americana, Verenis está consciente de que las barreras lingüísticas han presentado retos relacionados con el tomar los medicamentos. El haber visto situaciones similares a través de su vida y carrera fue lo que la inspiró a convertirse en una de nuestras procuradoras de cuidados del paciente. “Eso me tocó de cerca”, nos dijo. Ella pensaba en su madre, que no domina bien el inglés, por lo que conocía bien esas situaciones. Ella quería ayudar a las personas en su comunidad a comunicarse para que pudieran hacer sus cosas.

Aunque comenzó a trabajar en AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy en 2019 solamente con pacientes que hablan inglés, hace un año se ofreció para convertirse en una de nuestras agentes certificadas en español. Pues quería dar servicio en su lengua materna y ayudar a cerrar la brecha para los pacientes hispanos. Ya fuera tomando sus pedidos de medicamentos, contestando sus preguntas o devolviéndoles la llamada para dar un seguimiento, ella puso sus destrezas y su conocimiento cultural a la obra.
Su mayor satisfacción es saber que brinda un poco de alivio a los pacientes. Ellos le agradecen por ayudarles con lo que pensaban sería más difícil si no pudieran hacerlo en su idioma. En las palabras de Verenis, “Quiero que los pacientes sepan que, aunque haya una barrera de comunicación, siempre hay alguien que hará todo lo posible por ayudarlos. Yo siempre quise ser esa persona para otros. Agradezco la oportunidad que tengo en AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy de ser esa persona para alguien más que no habla inglés o tiene dificultad hablándolo. Me alegra poder usar mi voz aquí para ayudar a los pacientes.”
