Chronic disease comes in many forms, from autoimmune conditions such as arthritis to rare cancers like multiple myeloma. At AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy, our specialty pharmacists work hand-in-hand with patients by educating them on chronic disease and teaching them how to live their healthiest life while managing their disease.

I have an autoimmune condition called psoriatic arthritis. As someone who lives with a chronic disease, I like to share my experience with patients so they don’t feel alone in their journey. The counseling I provide becomes more of a conversation. Patients feel more open to having a dialogue about their concerns and struggles with their chronic disease.

Specialty pharmacists frequently speak to patients with chronic diseases, and we counsel them on how to prevent progression of the disease, including:

• Tips and tricks for a healthier lifestyle, like nutrition and sleep.

• Keeping a diary of symptoms.

• The importance of taking medications consistently and as directed, including setting alarms on a phone, using a calendar, or pill organizers; and

• Being honest about mental health and wellness to prevent disease flares.

Because patients interact so frequently with their specialty pharmacist, they often look to us for answers. Sometimes patients have a concern their provider hasn’t addressed, or they have questions about side effects or other medications.

Our specialty pharmacists speak to patients to help address those concerns and we’re available 24 hours a day. We use these conversations as an opportunity to ask if the patient wants to learn more about how to prevent or manage chronic diseases. We’re glad to take the time to have those conversations.

As pharmacists, patients often trust us and know they can reach out for help. Our purpose is to provide hope and care for better tomorrows, and we’re doing just that.
