Making Our Patients’ Lives Easier With Innovative Digital Tools

New digital tools mean patients choose how they share important information

At AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy, we know managing a chronic condition or rare disease can be all-consuming – either for our patients, or a member of their family. That’s why we are continually innovating new tools and solutions to make it easier for our patients to manage their prescriptions. We learned from patient experience research that patients want to be able take care of basic tasks on their own.

“In our satisfaction surveys, patients told us they want to get their medicine without having to get on the phone. And our team members told us they want to spend more time focusing on patients with complex needs,” says Jim Adams, chief information officer.

AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy responded by developing solutions that give both patients and team members what they want.

Online Tools

To make managing prescriptions easier than ever, our website provides tools and features that allow patients, their families and caregivers access to their prescription information from anywhere — 24/7.

After creating an online account, these are some of the convenient features available:

Email notifications. Patients choose to receive email notifications about the status of their specialty  pharmacy prescriptions. These messages include order confirmation and refill reminders.

Text notifications. Patients who register for an account with us are also able to consent to receiving text messages and automated calls from us. These messages provide important information related to a patient’s prescription(s), account, medication(s), etc. Some of the texts we send include delay messages, account balance alerts, refill reminders, order shipped alerts, and more.

Online refills. All specialty medications for a patient will be listed in their account to review and refill online. Some conditions or medications may also require a short phone call with our care team. However, patients can begin the process from their online account with 24/7 access.

Digital Clinical Assessments

With our digital clinical assessments, eligible patients can order refills online instead of calling the pharmacy by phone. This saves time, especially if they do not need to speak with a pharmacist.

Earlier in 2020, AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy announced the release of clinical assessments for patients with chronic inflammatory disease, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, organ transplants, lipid and blood disorders. Most recently, online clinical assessments for patients with cancer became available.

How the Digital Clinical Assessments Work

Eligible patients can refill prescriptions online in three easy steps:

•  Securely log into the online account,

•  Select medication(s) to refill, and

•  Answer questions specific to their condition.

Questions range from changes to medication to side effects to skipped doses. The online assessment has built-in features that help determine when a pharmacist needs to reach out to the patient.

“Our proprietary algorithms use information from the patient so we can ask relevant questions and identify specific needs for individual support. This helps us know if patients are safely taking their medicine and achieving benefit from their therapy,” says Adams. “Patients complete their entire transaction online – and still have the option to speak to a pharmacist if they desire, or if their responses necessitate follow up with a clinician.”

Completing clinical assessments online allows patients to get their medications faster, thus improving turnaround time. It also frees up our patient care advocates and pharmacists to focus on patients with more complex needs.

Online Access for Families & Caregivers

Managing medications can sometimes be a group effort. That’s why patients can manage multiple family member’s prescriptions from a single online account. And if they need to authorize a guardian or caregiver to receive prescription information on their behalf, they can do that too.

For caregivers, we know it’s important to have a list of their family’s medications on-hand. Caregivers can create an online account to help manage their family prescriptions. Watch the video.

At AllianceRx Walgreens Pharmacy, patients now choose how they want to share clinically important information with us. The greatest outcome for patients is a better experience and as a result, greater adherence to their therapy.

“Meeting patients on their terms translates to timely, customized and relevant clinical engagements,” says Adams. “We’ve raised the bar with self-service tools that empower patients to become more active in their own care.”
