Rare Disease Day: Supporting Cystic Fibrosis Caregivers

According to the National Institutes of Health, about 7,000 rare diseases collectively affect 25–30 million Americans. Many rare diseases are genetic, as in the case of cystic fibrosis (CF).

On this Rare Disease Day, we acknowledge the journey and challenges caregivers face. In the case of CF, many of these caregivers are parents. Most children with CF are diagnosed by the time they are 2 years old.1 Once diagnosed, there's a lot of information to process. First, learning about CF. Then, starting treatment and making lifestyle changes.

Our Specialty360 Pulmonary team is highly trained on pulmonary conditions, including CF. The team includes pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, insurance specialists, patient care advocates, and fulfillment specialists. They care for patients living with CF and support caregivers as needs and questions arise. Our team connects them with manufacturer support programs when available. And can offer counseling on ways to help their children stay on track with treatment while they juggle school and other activities.

Our pharmacists also share valuable insights to support caregivers. They provide tips to help them manage their loved ones' complex medication regimens. Caregivers can visit our Pharmacist Tips for this and other expert advice from our specialty pharmacists. We offer a condition guide to help patients and caregivers learn about living with CF. A one-of-a-kind guide for teenagers taking ownership of their CF care into adulthood is available too, among other tools. Patients and caregivers can access these CF resources here.

A Distinction in Rare and Orphan Diseases from the Accreditation Commission for Health Care reassures the advanced patient care we are known to provide for conditions like CF. Our approach helps us ensure access to treatment and tailored support for these patients. On this Rare Disease Day, we reiterate our commitment to all caregivers in making their loved ones’ treatments easier to manage.

We stand beside you because we put our patients first in everything we do.
